Big conventions like Otakon feel like pocket universes where attendees can free themselves from the… conventions… of ordinary life and embrace their creativity. I’d never attended a convention before Otakon last year, whereupon I was amazed by the variety and strength of enthusiasms all around me.
Although Otakon revolves around anime in particular and Asian pop culture more generally, cosplayers take advantage of the opportunity to dress however they want. Case in point: Spider-People.
Spider-Man (more often the Miles Morales version) and Spider-Woman seem to be popular costumes at Otakon. The photo at the top of this post features Evangeline Daring, an avid cosplayer who handed me her card.
