“The most beautiful drive in America.” That’s how Charles Kuralt, the CBS journalist who pushed six motor coaches past their limits traveling the backroads of America, described the Beartooth Highway that twists and turns through the Beartooth Mountains between the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park and Red Lodge, Montana.
I found that to be no hyperbole when experiencing it for myself a few weeks ago. A cornucopia of snow-capped mountain peaks and alpine lakes awaits intrepid travelers who don’t mind heights and curves. I will say that I’m grateful to my grandfather for contributing his extensive driving experience on trips like this, while I, an ensconced urbanite who doesn’t even own a car, take the pretty pictures.
